10 Sure-Fire Ways to Upgrade Your Living Room

10 Sure-Fire Ways to Upgrade Your Living Room

The living room is the heart of your home. Many families spend more time in there than any other room in the house. But, after a while, even your favorite room can seem stale. A full remodel isn’t always in the cards, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of upgrade options.  Adding one, or all, of these upgrades, is sure to revitalize your family favorite and impress a few friends too.

1. Add New Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are a budget-friendly way to change up the look in your living room. It’s also a great option if you’re not ready for a long-term change. With throw pillows, you can mix-and-match different colors and patterns. Feel free to play with different patterns with the same color scheme or mix solid colors with a patterned couch.

2. Invest In A New Chair

When upgrading a living room, many people jump to switching couches, and investing in a new chair is often overlooked. Chairs are excellent statement pieces because there is such a wide range of styles, patterns, and bold colors, a beautiful living room chair has never been easier to find. Whether you’re combing through second-hand stores for a vintage chaise lounge or perusing for a stressless furniture store online, options abound for the dedicated hunter (or huntress).

3. Install Floating Shelves

Floating shelves hide all screws and hardware making them a sleek and modern option for your living room. Shelves also offer a vertical solution to storage, giving a spacious look to even the smallest living spaces.

Well-chosen shelves are not only appealing on their own, but they also make the perfect home for your most prized photos and conversation pieces. Plus, few things can change the energy of a room more quickly than reducing clutter.

4. Try A Gallery Wall

If you have never heard of a gallery wall, it’s a wall with photographs or art pieces spaced and organized in a particular pattern, similar to an art gallery. This is also a great opportunity to put up pictures of your family and friends, making everyone feel at home when they visit.

Many gallery walls are organized around a common theme to tie everything together, say travel or major life events. So, all of those too-good-not-to-show-off photos from your trip to Tahiti or your children’s first birthdays can finally make their way into the light and out of the storage closet.

5. Add A Plant or Two

There are so many options for a pop of color in your living room. I suggest putting out fresh, colorful flowers at least once a month (more if you have the ability). Flowers also bring in a fresh scent and a feeling of light-heartedness and joy. If flowers aren’t your cup of tea, consider adding a pop of green with an air-cleaning houseplant or easy-to-care-for succulent.

6. Change Up the Lighting

The days of boring lighting fixtures are over. Give your place a modern look by adding a fun lamp, simple chandelier, or old-fashioned Edison bulbs. Even if you decide to keep your current lamp, you can always create an easy upgrade by updating to a new and improved lampshade.

7. Freshen Up With A New Coat of Paint

Simply repainting your living room can make it seem like a brand new space. Many amateur painters can attest to the total satisfaction that comes from a well-chosen and executed paint job.

A simple, light color can make the room seem bigger. Dark colors can create an appealing contrast to light colored furniture and floors. You can even add a statement wall by painting one wall in the living room a bright, bold color.

Statement walls can add a sense of elegance to your home but be cautious. While the right shade will be eye-catching, the wrong shade will draw too much negative attention, distracting from your other projects and pieces.

8. Buy An Area Rug

When you think of an area rug, you may be thinking of the busy, antique-looking rugs you see in your grandma’s home. This no longer needs to be the case. There are so many new types of area rugs these days, and for much more reasonable prices than in the past. Your rug can bring a modern feel or a pop of color. Adding a new and unique rug to your living room can easily equate to adding an exceptional piece of art.

9. Update Your Furniture

A few options for staple pieces of furniture include an entertainment center, coffee table, or a pair of side tables. Make sure that they all flow together. If you’re looking for a one-off upgrade, start with the entertainment center. Finding an updated entertainment center will add a beautiful focal point to the room.

10. Incorporate Candles

No matter the season, everyone loves a cozy living room. On top of your new throw pillows, add some coziness by bringing in natural candlelight. Candles come in so many different sizes, colors, and scents so it should be easy to find the perfect candle for your color scheme.
